The following is a list of Web Site categories that content filters attempt to classify most sites into.

Alcohol
Websites which sell or contain information relating to the recreational use of alcohol. This includes sites that sell alcohol, sites of alcohol manufacturers, sites containing tips and information on mixing your own drinks, and any other sites dedicated to and promoting the use of alcohol. This does not include restaurant sites that display their wine list on the site, unless it is an establishment like a pub that primarily sells alcohol and promotes itself as such.

Art
Websites which promote, exhibit, or display works of art, including sites for art galleries, museums, and art instruction. Personal or commercial websites for individual artists fall under this category. This category is not used for sites containing graphic art depicting violence (see R-rated) or corporate stock photography galleries (see Unstable Content).

Automobile
Websites which market, discuss, promote, or offer information on all forms of transportation. This would include vehicle maintenance websites and car rental sites.

Banner Ads
Websites which are usually in the form of banner advertisements on other unrelated sites you may be viewing. They help pay for the cost of the website, and are hosted by third party servers.

Books & Literature
Websites that discuss or promote books and literature. They may include authors' websites, publishers' promotional sites, online books, books in audio format, sites containing book reviews, fan-fiction sites, or sites containing scripts for movies, TV, or drama. This category is not used for sites containing adult fiction or erotica (See Pornography) .

Chat
Sites which allow chatting without a moderator to monitor for questionable content. In order to avoid this category, the site must require the moderator to be present the entire time the chat is open.

Child Pornography
Websites which display photographs of children posed in a sexual manner, engaging in sexual activity, or posted to encourage prurient interest.

Comics
Websites which include online comic strips and cartoons, comic book commentaries and fan sites, comic flash media and online animation, and comic strip publisher sites. This category is not used for comic sites depicting violence or sex.

Community Organizations
Websites which include non-profit, charity, and community involvement organizations such as the YMCA, March of Dimes, Big Brothers/Sisters, Boy/Girl Scouts, and any local organizations such as social charity groups. This would also include support group sites such as MOMS, and home school groups. This category is not used for community sites promoting lifestyle choices such as sexual preference.

Criminal Skills
Websites which promote illegal or criminal activity such as credit card theft, illegal surveillance, and murder.

Cults
Websites which promote non-traditional or unconventional religious activities, and a zealous devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work.

Drugs
Websites which promote the sale or use of illegal drugs and narcotics, including sites offering paraphernalia for use with narcotics, legal supplements for their narcotic effect, or instruction manuals for the production of various narcotics. This category is also for sites that glorify the hallucinogenic effects of drugs, and for sites that offer techniques and products for testing clean for drugs.

Education
Web sites of schools, learning centers, universities, teaching institutions, workshops, technical institutes and trade schools. Sites that contain information on teaching aids such as lesson planning guides, teacher supplies, career development education and .edu sites.

Education Cheating
Websites which offer "cheat" helps for students, including essays on various topics or cheat software for online or computer-hosted tests, whether or not it is for profit.

Educational Games
Websites which offer games related to education, such as reading, spelling, math, and developmental games.

Employment
Websites which are geared toward job seekers, and include sites such as job bulletin boards, classified ad sites, services that list or compile resumes and cover letters, and headhunting firms.

Entertainment
Websites which include any general entertainment sites not already classified in a specific category, such as restaurants and clubs, clipart and animated .gifs, amusement parks, and sites offering cell-phone ring tones.

Explicit Art
Websites that display artwork containing graphic nudity, nude photography, sexual acts and other questionable images.

Websites which are dedicated to the promotion of fashion and modeling, including discussion boards, portfolio sites and modeling agencies, contests and fashion shows, and any non-commercial website dedicated to fashion.

Finance
Websites which are related to the financial trade, and include stock and exchange trading sites, financial news sites, and online banking services.

Fitness
Websites which promote or discuss diet and exercise, and include health clubs, specific forms of exercise such as yoga and weight training, sites that provide nutritional supplements or fitness equipment, and diet or weight management sites.

Free Hosts
Websites which are hosted by consumer-oriented free hosts or ISP's, including such sites as members.aol.com and Geocities sites.

Gambling
Websites which encourage gambling, and may include betting, bookmaker odds, lottery, bingo, horse or dog track, or online casinos.

Games
Websites that offer or promote games. These may include discussion, review, or online gaming sites. This category also applies to sites that offer or are dedicated to promoting board games and electronic games. Sweepstakes and giveaway sites would also fall under this category. This category is not used for gaming sites depicting violence or sex.

General Business
Websites which are businesses defined as organizations that provide goods or services for profit.

Government
Websites which include sites with .gov domain, and any other sites for governmental agencies at the national, state, local, or international level.

Websites which promote unlawful or questionable tools to gain access to software or hardware, communications equipment, or passwords. This category includes sites that discuss password generation, compiled binaries, hacking tools, or software piracy.

Hate and Discrimination
Websites which contain material related to discrimination based on race, religion, gender, or nationality. This category includes sites that approve of racial superiority, degradation, violence, or the destruction of human life motivated by such discrimination.

Health Medical
Websites which contain information on the practice of medicine, and may include medical practice, hospital, health insurance provider, nursing home, and assisted living sites. This category also includes websites that offer or provide information on prescription medicines and over-the-counter treatments, as well as preventative health care. This category does not include sites for alternative medicine.

Holistic
Websites which offer information on alternative medicines and natural healing. These sites may include information on homeopathic medicine, acupuncture and acupressure, chakra alignment, or Feng Shui.

Humor
Websites which contain material offered for the sake of humor, and may include audio files or written jokes. This category does not encompass sites containing discriminatory, off-color or obscene jokes, which will be placed under other respective categories which may apply.

Instant Messaging
Websites which offer or support instant messaging. These sites may include central servers or client based instant messaging applications. This category also applies to downloadable software for cell phones or PDA's.

Internet Radio
Websites which offer streaming radio programming. This category does not apply to sites that offer music downloads.

Internet Service Provider
Websites that offer Internet access services (cable, DSL, dial-up, etc.).

Legal
Websites which offer legal information, which may include legal services (notaries, etc.), legal reference, online legal aid, law firm websites, and law libraries.

Lifestyle
Websites which contain material relative to an individual's personal choices. This category includes sites advocating sexual lifestyles outside of marriage.

Local Community
Websites which promote community involvement, and may include City or local government sites, the Chamber of Commerce, or sites that detail community events or places to see.

Malicious Code/Spyware/Virus
Websites which may promote destructive or harmful computer code, or software intended to monitor user behavior without the user's knowledge and consent. This category applies to instruction, message board, or download sites that offer this material.

Message Boards
Websites which offer interaction among Internet users with similar interests. They may include message boards, bulletin boards, forums, or any other site that offers its visitors the ability to discuss topics with one another via the Internet. This category applies to downloadable and customizable message board software.

Militant/Extremist/Terrorist
Websites which contain information regarding militias, anti-government or establishment groups, terrorism, anarchy, or weapons of mass destruction.

Military Appreciation
Websites which promote or celebrate the armed services, including individual or regiment sites, and veteran or troop support sites.

Military Official
Websites which include all .mil top-level domains, and any other government-sponsored sites on the various branches of the military.

Websites which discuss or promote music, musicians, or the methods in which they are distributed. This category includes official and fan sites for musical artists

Recreational

Religion
Websites which are dedicated to mainstream religious institutions. These sites may include church sites, information regarding service times or location, or church event calendars. Religious Opinion
